It seems every time I sit down to write about the changing of the seasons, I think of new beginnings. In reality I know that Spring is the season that represents new beginnings but I guess the positive nature of my mind, tells me that there are always new beginnings. Although Fall is a time when the leaves begin to die and the plants go dormant for the winter, the seeds are being dropped which will eventually be our new spring beginnings. It's all a cycle and that's how I like to look at death...death is not an ending but a transition to a new beginning. I have also always looked at the beginning of the school year as a new year, more so than the actual new year on January 1st. The children are back in school and we can finally get to some of the things on our to-do list that we set aside for the summer.
This Saturday, September 22nd marks the Autumnal Equinox when the the daylight hours are almost equal with the darkness of night and the wheel is balanced.
Autumn is represented by buffalo spirit and the direction of the west, the bringing in of the harvest, a time of reflection and introspection, gratitude, balance, dormancy, stillness, everything is at rest...let's welcome Autumn and all that it brings!
For some reason Autumn also reminds me of a concept that was created by the Danes to help acknowledge or appreciate the simpleness of life called Hygge (pronounced hue-guh). There is no English word equivalent to Hygge. It is more a “feeling” than a thing. It's about being present, conscious, content, cozy and making the ordinary extraordinary. I find it a fascinating concept and if you'd like to learn more about it, check out www.hyggehouse.com. I really do try to take time to enjoy the simple things in life and Hygge reminds us to do this. So this Fall season is the perfect time to enjoy a warm cup of tea and a good book, or some comfort food with friends, warm socks, a cozy fire and whatever other simple pleasure resonates with you. It's about connecting, being present and having gratitude for what is.
Branching Out Vision
It has taken me almost a year of being in business (three quarters of a year that has flown by, I might add!) to finally get a clear vision for Branching Out. I feel very passionate about connecting with people, about making a difference in people's lives and in our world. It is in these passions that my vision comes to life.
~~ Branching Out seeks to create a community of like minded people who value self care, care for others and care for the world around us. ~~
As part of this vision, I have been brainstorming so many wonderful ideas for what Branching Out will be and here are a few that come to mind:
- A place where people gather socially to share conversation, food & drink and friendship.
- A place people can count on for information, education and sharing common interests.
- A place where people feel comfortable to shop for items that feel good for your soul.
I feel strongly that keeping my store small and personal will help make this vision a reality. Staying small does come with it's challenges but I feel that together, we can make Branching Out something really special for our little community. I'm asking for your support in helping to make my vision a reality by making Branching Out your go-to place for all that we have to offer. I cannot do this alone...community is a group effort and I need your support to make my vision a reality.
The first community event being held at Branching Out to help support this vision is a Natural Birth Workshop being offered by Jessica Edgar of Born Knowing Holistic Wellness & Birth. This workshop will be held on October 21st from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Please see the Born Knowing facebook page for more information on this event.
Branching Out is also collaborating with Karin DeVries, a local environmental advocate, who is offering a film screening of: Evolution of Organic on September 25th from 6pm to 8pm at the Elmsdale Library. Branching Out will be offering hot tea and coffee during the movie. Please see the event page for more information.
Stay tuned for more community building events coming soon! All events will be posted on our Facebook page. If you have an idea for an event that supports our vision, please get in touch...I'd love to hear about it!
We are also building community by supporting other events or business that support our vision. Here are a few that I'd like to mention:
The Night Market – Carroll's Corner Community Centre
The night market runs from 4:30 to 8:30 every Thursday from June 21 until December 13. Join myself and all of the other great local vendors at The Night Market. Branching Out offers organic coffee and loose leaf tea, healthy snacks and a selection of products from the store each week. There are also lots of dinner options available so plan to take a night off from the kitchen on Thursday nights (like I do!) and have dinner at the market.
Snowy River Farms
Offering hormone and antibiotic free, pasture raised pork, free range chicken, and traditionally raised produce. Snowy River Farm's meat products can be purchased at Branching Out, The Night Market or directly through Snowy River Farms. They also offer a CSA (which stands for Community Supported Agriculture but is more commonly known as a veggie box program) that can be picked up at Branching Out every Wednesday. Please see Snowy River Farm's website for more information on their seasonal CSAs and what is offered when.
Here is some contact information for local non-toxic hair salon and home cleaning services:
